Missoula County prepares for increased bear activity as Buffer Zone expands

15 Apr 2025

As bears emerge from hibernation this spring, Missoula County officials are urging residents to take proactive steps to secure garbage and reduce the risk of bear-human conflicts. The expansion of the Bear Buffer Zone continues in 2025 as part of the Bear Smart Missoula program, a multi-phase effort designed to address a growing number of incidents involving bears and unsecured attractants such as garbage, pet food and bird feeders.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks has reported recent bear activity in northern areas of Missoula County, a typical occurrence during spring as bears search for food. Missoula County is reminding residents in or near upcoming buffer zones to begin preparations now.

Trash Requirements for Residents

For areas within the buffer zone, the use of certified bear-resistant trash containers is mandatory. Residents should prepare accordingly based on how their waste is managed:

  • For customers of Grizzly Disposal or Republic Services: Bear-resistant containers will be provided by the hauler.

  • For customers using personal trash cans with these haulers: Residents must lease a bear-resistant container or purchase one compatible with their hauler’s equipment (Toter for Grizzly Disposal and Kodiak for Republic Services). Leased containers are maintained and replaced by the hauler; purchased containers are the homeowner’s responsibility.

  • For residents who haul their own garbage: Certified bear-resistant containers must be used, and garbage must be hauled to the landfill weekly.

County officials are encouraging residents in Phase 2 and 3 areas to upgrade to bear-resistant containers now rather than waiting for the mandatory deadlines. Early adoption helps reduce the likelihood of bear encounters and supports a smoother rollout of the regulations.
