Missoula County and the community of Condon are evaluating a proposed container site on Barber Creek Road where Condon-area residents and commercial businesses could deposit trash and other solid waste. Property owners would pay an annual fee through a special district assessment on their property tax bill to dispose trash at the site.

Missoula County worked with community partners to complete a container site evaluation, and determined around 704 property owners could benefit from a site in the Condon area. Currently, the closest trash disposal sites are located more than 30 miles away in Seeley Lake and Lake County.

The cost to build the site is estimated at $612,000. The estimated annual operating budget would be $228,833, which would include the debt service for site construction and other capital costs. Property owners would pay $300 a year through an assessment on their property tax bill. The special district would include residential and commercial properties in School District #33, and it would operate similarly to the Seeley Lake Refuse District. Vacant land would not be assessed.

The staffed site would be open two days a week, which would likely include one weekday and one weekend day.

We are part-time residents in the Condon area. We always transport our trash back to Missoula and are adamantly opposed to paying an additional tax for a service we do not need and would not use--our property taxes are already too high! Republic Services offers trash pick-up in the Swan Valley. Residents who need their trash picked-up should sign-up with Republic Services.

What might make this affordable is to have the dump available for all the people that camp, vacation and have summer homes in the Swan Valley. They are here only for three to four months of the year. The cabin owners are already being taxed $4,000 to $6,000+ for the few months they are living here. They pay the same amount as those in town that live year round in their homes. So make the dump available three to four months out of the year and close it the rest.

It's in the summer that we should encourage part-timers, campers and vactioners to dump their garbage at the container site. It should be made free to all for those short few months, and paid from the general fund. That's because its the folks from town coming here to vacation, that don't want to haul their garbage back to town. I pray they don't throw it in the woods although we have caught that happening in the past.

There are a lot of people that live alone and on fixed incomes. $300/year is expensive. For myself Living alone I generate three or four bags of garbage per month. This proposal would cost $6.25 per bag of garbage to throw away. That's four 13-gallon kitchen bags of garbage for $25.00. Maybe this makes sense for large families which are few here in the valley due to lack of jobs.
Taxes are already high in Missoula County and we don't get much for what we do pay. The county does a poor job on our county road even though I know the combined taxes paid for the summer home people is over $250,000.00/year. You would think they could grade the road more often for that amount of money! Currently the road is a wreck and costs us money to continually have our wheels aligned. I would gladly volunteer to grade the road, but no you have to have the power to control all this instead of taking advantage of willing volunteer labor. Simply put Missoula County govt. is becoming an Autocracy.

Not supported by residents in the immediate area. Concern for abuse by visiting tourists and non-residents, not to mention an eyesore and animal attractant

Krisco almost 3 years ago

This is a poor place to set up a garbage disposal site and residents do not support this location.

Currently pay to haul to Lake County. I would utilize this were it available. Probably cheaper with gas prices going up and Lake County raising their fee to $200.

Currently I am not in favor of the site. I think it will be used and abused by those who do not pay or live in the area. It will also be an eye sore and attract crittters both large and small. Also it will be a financial burden to those on fixed incomes. I agree with many of the comments below. Please listen to the concerns of those living in the area. Thank you for the opportunity to share comments.

Only people who reside in Missoula county should comment on this. Not fair to have Lake county residents have any say in raising Missoula country residents’ taxes. So when you decide take that into consideration.

Definitely vote NO on the proposed dump site in Condon. Our taxes are already way too high so we don't need anything like this to raise our taxes. If we want that service, we can pay the fee in Lake County or hire a private trash company. Plus we don't need a dump site that will lower property values. Definitely a NO vote on the dump idea in Condon.

The Condon container site would provide a great service to us as an incredibly more convenient location for taking our refuse. As working folk, it is hard to find time to drive our stuff to Seeley on the limited dates and times the Seeley container site operates. In being more convenient, we would likely dispose of our trash more frequently reducing dispersed conflict with wildlife.

Caitlin Mitchell almost 3 years ago

We have lived here over 40 years and have responsibly disposed of our waste by recycling and composting. As a retired couple on a fixed income , the cost of the site will negatively affect us. We do not have a problem with bears and a dump site will not solve irresponsible food and waste storage by others. The existing waste disposal company does a good job with bear resistant containers. Many people shop in Flathead and Lake counties and Lake county has a fair fee for using their convenient and well managed dump sites. We don't need or want a dump site in Condon.

To expensive .

I am very happy with Republic picking up my trash at my home. The site will only be open two days a week in summer one in winter months. If that one day a week in the winter months is 20 below zero or a blizzard I do not see many going to that site that week.
We only have so much available space to build homes in this community I don’t see there being enough homes to support something that is that extreme and expense. You can put some dumpsters with a fence around it for people to dump in. I personally don’t believe in voting myself in a tax because once you have that tax it never goes away it only goes up. So I personally do not want any more taxes on my bill. Pay attention to the east and the west coast and how out of control property taxes are for homeowners. I think this problem with garbage cans and bears is an individual problem and it starts at that person‘s property and maybe that person needs to learn how to live in the woods. It is always easy to spend other peoples money.
Very much over too much government.

The cost of government in Missoula County seems to grow faster than the primary resident population growth or actual real property development (tax base) growth in the Condon Community. Unless or until there is a demonstrated growth in primary resident population and actual growing real estate tax base in the Condon Community we just do not want or need any more help/services/taxes from Missoula County. Look for other Missoula County neighborhoods to tax & spend.

JOHN B KELLER almost 3 years ago

Strong vote against this proposal!!! There are other options that are not near this expensive

RK almost 3 years ago

I do not think we need a disposal sight. We are already overtaxed. Republic does well for those who choose and the sights north and south serve us well. It's a bear attractant and often abused by irresponsible people who don't care.

Linda Schuff almost 3 years ago

A Container site in Condon would benefit the residents who do not have a convenient way to dispose of trash, and be of less benefit to others. But there is far too much irresponsible dumping in
the area, endangering people and wildlife, and the situation is likely to become worse. On balance, I believe a container site is necessary..

We currently have weekly service with republic service and are happy with it do not want to pay an additional 300 dollars a year for unneeded service we can take non household trash to seeley lake if needed

roland matthew almost 3 years ago

There is trash pickup, as well as two dump sites within driving distance. Condon certainly does NOT need an additional dump site. I vote NO!
