Missoula County and the community of Condon are evaluating a proposed container site on Barber Creek Road where Condon-area residents and commercial businesses could deposit trash and other solid waste. Property owners would pay an annual fee through a special district assessment on their property tax bill to dispose trash at the site.
Missoula County worked with community partners to complete a container site evaluation, and determined around 704 property owners could benefit from a site in the Condon area. Currently, the closest trash disposal sites are located more than 30 miles away in Seeley Lake and Lake County.
The cost to build the site is estimated at $612,000. The estimated annual operating budget would be $228,833, which would include the debt service for site construction and other capital costs. Property owners would pay $300 a year through an assessment on their property tax bill. The special district would include residential and commercial properties in School District #33, and it would operate similarly to the Seeley Lake Refuse District. Vacant land would not be assessed.
The staffed site would be open two days a week, which would likely include one weekday and one weekend day.

Republic services picks trash up here already. A whole lot cheaper than the figures you provided!
The cost to landowners will be high, but the advantages -- especially the reduction of bear-attracting trash on and near the highway -- make the extra cost (above what Lake County charges for a dump permit) worth it to us. But for people with shakier financial situations, the high cost will surely be a deal-breaker. I wish there were some way of lessening the cost to people who can't afford $300.
Condon does not need a new dump site, at that outrageous cost. And another large bear attraction so close to homes. Don’t need anymore taxes!!!!
We have owned our Condon property for 37 years. At first, we thought this might be a good idea for Condon residents. However, after seeing details of what's proposed and comparing those with options that already exist for people to dispose of garbage, we don't think another container site is necessary here. We're not in favor of this proposal. Thanks for asking.
I am against having a container site here in Condon. I do not want to have my property taxes raised for this purpose. The initial set up costs are way too high. We would not need a $40000 or $50000 building on site. This is crazy as other counties that have container sites do not have structures to pay for and maintain. I am very happy paying Lake County $180.00 per year. I travel that way a great deal. No container site for Condon. Enough with the high taxes in our county.

We have had a cabin in condon for over 20 years and spend about 2 weeks a month there, we bring our garbage back to lolo with us. I'll not be paying a ridiculous cost for something I will never use. There is already garbage service available for some and for the others there are transfers stations on the way to Kalispell or missoula.
I am not in favor of the site nor the tax. In 3 years I have hauled to the Seeley locations dump once. It may be years before I do that again and feel most residents, all 247 of them feel the same way. We don’t have that much money to keep getting taxed for services we don’t want or need. We already pay for trash haulers. This location is Pristine and the suggested location would damage property values. We consider the issues regarding bear attraction. More bears consolidating in one area can’t be good. How much trash do you think we need hauled for 247 residents? Driving 30 miles once every few years or more is a small price to pay. Perhaps we should file a FOIA request to see where you are spending all of our tax dollars. Missoula county is the third most populated county in the State and the highest taxed. If you need suggestions on where to spend our money, just ask. I’m sure you will get plenty of input.
Absolutely not on the container site. I want my taxes reduced not increased because of all of these out of staters moving here with deep pocketbooks. Beware of invalidism if this is approved. I will not pay the extra $300 on my tax bill because I will not be using it. Go back to where you came from and quit trying to change Montana!
I do not think we need to have a container site, as they are unsightly , bear attractants, and we do not need any further fees added to our taxes.
Ridiculous high price. Nobody wants to pay more taxes, too much government waste already. People should be responsible for themselves.
I vote no.
As a property owner I vote no. The price and environmental impact are too high.
I vote a big fat NO
I think you are asking over taxed people to pay more taxes. We are already paying Republic for our trash removal and are quite happy with their service. You are going to punish a private business, and increase cost to remaining customers who like the service they provide. Those that are in favor of a transfer system pay for it yourselves. Maybe we can come up with our own hair brain idea that will increase your taxes $300 annually, for a “ service” you do not want or need. In other words pay for it yourselves.

Cost, is too high, plus it will go up every year. With the bear problems we have now, not a smart plan, unless your going to have a special season on Griz and black bears, to help FWP. I’m sure there will be a study on the impact on wildlife, before starting any site. We are a pristine valley, would like to keep it that way. People moved here to be remote, away from city life. If you want something like that, move to town. I would like to revisit leaving this county.
Your costs are ridicules. Over priced waste management programs need to stay out of the swan valley.
This is a waste of money. That would disproportionately affect the poorest and those on fixed income. It is unnecessary and over priced.
Any cost-saving measures would garner more support from the community. Including bins for recycling would be helpful.
