Food Policy Advisory Board 2024 Annual Report
Erika Berglund presented the Food Policy Advisory Board (FPAB) Annual Report to the board of county commissioners on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2024. The presentation provided an annual update and covered several key points:
Current Membership: The board has seven members, and two alternates focused on food policy, including recent interns and staff support.
Community Food Assessment Survey: The board conducted its third Rapid Community Food Assessment survey, with 289 respondents (65% from the city, 35% from the county). This sample was 17% smaller than the 2022 survey.
2024 Food Policy Priorities: There is an emphasis on land use, economic development and improving local food access and promotion.
Internal Policy & Initiatives: FPAB is making efforts to expand outreach, capacity and support while clarifying FPAB’s role. County and city funding supported two graduate interns who helped with survey analysis, agriculture data review and comparative research on food assessments in Montana. The board also has a quarterly newsletter that is distributed via email.
Board’s Relationships and Strategic Planning: FPAB is strengthening connections with County staff and the Ecology & Extension department. Regular meetings with the department have moved to the Exploration Center with collaboration in upcoming strategic planning.
Next Steps: There will be an upcoming vote on a new resolution aimed at streamlining FPAB’s structure. In addition, recommendations are being developed for a comprehensive Community Food Assessment and a local food action plan. Plans are also underway to partner with the University of Montana for a student exhibit and panel event on local food in December.
