Project Background:

Missoula County is applying for a federal grant through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to fund the Missoula County Brownfields Program, which pays for environmental site assessments for properties that might have environmental contamination caused by human development.

These assessments provide property owners or potential buyers with environmental due diligence while promoting revitalization of underused or blighted properties. The program does not cover the costs of environmental cleanup.

The Missoula County Brownfields Program is a collaborative project between the county and the Environmental Protection Agency. No property taxes go toward it. The Brownfields program is voluntary; it is not an enforcement program.

The County is seeking ideas for potential Brownfield sites in Missoula County to include in the application for federal funding.

What types of properties qualify for Brownfields assistance?

Examples of potential brownfield sites include, but are not limited to:

  • Former gas stations
  • Auto repair shops
  • Pesticide/herbicide/chemical handling facilities
  • Landfills
  • Illegal dump sites
  • Industrial manufacturing sites
  • Warehouses
  • Dry cleaners
  • Wood treatment facilities
  • Gravel pits
  • Buildings containing asbestos, lead-based paint or other hazardous building materials
  • Properties that may have been used to produce methamphetamine

What properties do not qualify for Missoula County Brownfields assistance?

  • Smurfit Stone and other federal Superfund properties
  • Properties without the potential of a public benefit (for example, single-family home would not qualify)
  • Properties outside Missoula County
