Seeley Lake Elementary school zone and school zone speed limit
Update: The county commissioners approved school zone and school zone speed limit for Seeley Lake Elementary at their April 9 public hearing meeting.
Project Description
Missoula County opened a public hearing period to establish a school zone and a school zone speed limit at Seeley Lake Elementary, located at 200 School Lane in Seeley Lake. At the end of the hearing period, the county commissioners will consider a resolution to do the following:
- Establish a 20-mph school zone speed limit on School Lane and on Pine Drive
- Install signs on School Lane and Pine Drive near Seeley Lake Elementary School
- Double the fines for speeding in the school zone

Project Background
The Seeley Lake Elementary School superintendent contacted Public Works staff in September 2025 with concerns about the speed limit and school zone signs around Seeley Lake Elementary School. Current signs on School Lane are minimal because standards were different when they were put in place. Additionally, there are no signs on Pine Drive, which is next to the school. Public Works staff have no record of action to establish a school zone or school zone limit in the Seeley Lake Elementary School area.
State law requires local agencies to consult with the school district when establishing a school zone. Since there is no existing designation, the superintendent took the request to the school board and the Seeley Lake Community Council, where it received unanimous support. The superintendent then submitted the request to Public Works staff, followed by the county commissioners approving a public hearing period on March 5. The hearing will close and the county commissioners will vote on the proposed resolution during a public hearing meeting on Thursday, April 9.

I am really glad the school is reaching out for this change. We desperately need some speed, road markings and signage structure in the school zone. Please consider this as if your kids went to school here. Thank you!
