Missoula County’s Trails Bond Program 

In November 2014, Missoula city and county residents approved a $42 million countywide Parks & Trails Bond to expand or improve park and recreational opportunities in Missoula County. Specifically, bond funding went towards three initiatives:

  • $38 Millon – Full development of Fort Missoula Regional Park

  • $3 Millon – Creation of the County Trails Bond program

  • $1 Millon – Upgrading and replacing playgrounds across multiple City Parks.

The $3 million set aside for the County Trails Bond program is intended to financially support trail development across Missoula County. These trail projects are supposed to provide additional opportunities for recreation, access to public lands, and connections between communities.  

The Trails Bond Program encourages applications for all types of trails – commuter, recreational, fitness, equestrian, ski trails and more. Project sponsors are asked to demonstrate community support through partnerships and secured or pending project funding sources.

    Project Description

    Missoula County has applied for $62,619 to support two county-owned trail projects in the West Riverside and Lolo areas.

    • Woody Mountain Project: Construction of 0.45 miles of natural-surface trail up Woody Mountain, and a 0.25-mile lower loop in the West Riverside (east of Missoula) area.
    • Lolo Hillside Park System: Create approximately 1.2 miles of designated trail connecting the Lolo Hillside Park System to the new trail system in the Belltower Subdivision.

    Both projects will improve trail connectivity, formalize existing recreational use, and expand access to the County’s growing network of parks and trails.
