Current Status

The Wye Infrastructure Plan is a guiding document that envisions how to improve roads, sewer, water, stormwater, public safety, parks, and schools to support future housing and job growth at the Wye.

On December 4, 2025 the County Commissioners will hold a public hearing on the draft Wye Infrastructure Plan.

Background

In 2019, following a robust, multi-year public engagement process, Missoula County adopted the Missoula Area Land Use Element, a vision to guide growth and development in the Missoula Valley. This document identified the Wye as an important location to meet the county’s growing housing and employment needs. However, the plan also recognized that the Wye lacks the infrastructure necessary to support this vision for growth and called for detailed infrastructure planning to determine the scope of needed improvements and potential funding options.

The Wye Infrastructure Plan is an infrastructure-focused planning document that evaluates the best options for improving roads, sewer, water, stormwater, public safety, parks, and schools to accommodate growth in the Wye over the long-term. The plan assesses infrastructure needs, provides conceptual layouts for how improvements might best serve the community, and offers a framework for potential financing strategies.

Over the next twenty years and beyond, the plan will guide infrastructure development and placement based on the community’s 2019 vision for growth. The Wye Infrastructure Plan focuses on infrastructure—it does not determine where development will occur or at what densities.

The school isalready stretched thin and needs more support with the influx of housing. Another issue is traffic at the Wye. The stop lights in place do not handle the traffic well now and the 55 MPH limit to the Frontage road is obeyed terribly in warmer weather. How do you propose to again, handle the influx? Another concern voiced by many in our area is lack of goods, services, and transport options in Frenchtown. Currently our area is NOT equipped for the density your proposal calls for.     Missoula County adopted the Missoula Area Land Use Element in 2019, and followed up with zoning of the Wye in 2022. These are the documents that guide the density in the Wye. The Wye Infrastrucute plan does not address density, it only looks at what infrastrucute is necessary to support that density. So, in essence, you are right, the area does not support the density that is envisioned for the area, and that is the exact reason why we are drafting the Wye Infrastructure  Plan, to have a clear understanding of what infrastructure is necessary and how to provide it.

The 4plexes Tollefson is building adjacent to Interstate 90 and adjacent to the Frontage Road that "skirted" Missoula County's planning are on my mind.     The Wye Infrastructure Plan addresses infrastructure needs, such as roads, water, sewer, and public safety. This project was factored in to the infrastructure needs of the area for this plan however, the regulatory systems under which the proposal was reviewed for land use approvals is outside the scope of the Wye Infrastructure Plan. For details on the land use processes and approvals of this specific development, contact Missoula County Department of Planning Development and Sustainability.
