Missoula County has approximately 1,500 miles of public roadway. The County’s Road and Bridge Department is responsible for maintaining approximately 447 miles of road as well as 465 bridges and culverts. Of these 447 miles, approximately 253 miles are paved and 190 are gravel. Road maintenance includes things like road repair, snow removal, right-of-way maintenance, paving, graveling, grading and dust abatement.

Though the County maintains 447 miles of road, funding to provide that maintenance is limited, which means staff prioritize roads based on the road’s traffic level and maintenance urgency (such as if the road or bridge poses a safety risk). Some maintenance can be performed relatively quickly, such as patching potholes in the summer and plowing roads in the winter. Other maintenance is more complex and takes time and funding, such as repaving a whole section of road or installing a culvert.
